Full-time employment at The Codemasters Software Company Limited from May 2019 to present day
As DiRT Rally 2.0 began to shift towards the end of its life-cycle Codemasters' latest Formula 1 title became one of my main projects for 2020.
Unlike for DiRT Rally 2.0 where I took a lead role in all social media and community activity, my involvement in F1 2020 was in more of a supportive role, as I was responsible for the production of various forms of visual media to help support the game's wider activities.
Having shown my creative ability and knowledge of sim racing with DiRT Rally 2.0 I was given the opportunity to create content that would excite and educate the kinds of players I knew best. I would work on DiRT Rally 2.0 and F1 2020 simultaneously throughout 2020.
In this role I contributed to many various aspects regarding brand communication, including but not limited to the following:
• Performance driving and gameplay capture for multiple trailers, clips and videos
• Thumbnail image creation for the majority of videos across YouTube, Twitter, Facebook & Instagram
• Development, recording, editing and publication of F1 2020's educational content on YouTube
• In-game photography and generation of official screenshots for events, teams, sponsors & other outlets
• General assistance with marketing asset development and publication
F1 2020 Hotlap Series
Prior to the release of F1 2020 I was involved in the creation of various gameplay trailers, giving fans a first look at new circuits, features, car models and more. I would also provide gameplay footage for various team, sponsor and media requests.
As an experienced sim racer I was given the task of driving each circuit at speed, recording my gameplay from various angles and providing it to the in-house video team, who would use the footage as part of the game's trailers in the run up to launch.
Once the videos were complete I would contribute to their publication by creating the master thumbnails for each video, using in-game photography tools for the source images and Adobe Photoshop for the graphics.
The hotlap series would generate over 1,500,000 views on YouTube throughout the game's launch period, helping to spread word of the game to a wide audience of fans and potential new players.
F1 2020 Driving & Feature Guides
Once F1 2020 was released to the world and began its post-launch service period I played a greater role in terms of video communications, as I lead the creation and development of the game's educational assets across YouTube, Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
With racing games having a reputation for their difficulty I was tasked with breaking down complex topics in an approachable manner, so that beginner and intermediate level players could improve their skills and further enjoy their time with F1 2020.
The series would encompass a comprehensive Beginner's Guide, tips on how to drive without various assists, introduction to new features and advice on how to better understand and improve player performance in-game.
I would choose the topics to focus on, write the caption scripts, record the gameplay footage, edit and produce the videos, while sound was touched-up by the in-house audio team.
Once complete and approved by Formula One Management (FOM), I would create final assets and thumbnails, and provide everything to the Social Media team for publication.
To date these guides have generated over 400,000 views on YouTube alone, with the content providing long-term value to players.
F1 2020 Track Guides
In addition to the Driving & Feature guides I was also tasked with creating track guides for each circuit featured in F1 2020.
I would handle the driving and gameplay capture, while also pointing out key things to watch out for throughout the lap. Again, I would take care of the edit, thumbnail generation and final asset delivery, with the in-house audio team touching up the sounds before release.
The videos have generated over 100,000 views to date on YouTube, and formed a key part of the Social Media team's communications during each Grand Prix weekend.
F1 2020 Screenshots
Prior to the release of F1 2020 the majority of screenshots were taken by the in-house art and video teams, however this responsibility would largely shift to me post-launch, as I created over 300 marketing assets using F1 2020's in-game photography tools.
Screenshots of each car and driver were created on a regular basis, following the real-world season's calendar to provide the Social Media team with assets to share throughout each Grand Prix weekend.
I would also on occasion create screenshots to support various marketing activities and game updates, while also fulfilling various requests by teams and sponsors for their various endeavours involving the game.
