In 2018 Mercedes continued its long-standing relationship with the FIA Formula 1 World Championship in providing a new Safety Car. This car was based on the Mercedes AMG GTR road car and upgraded with numerous devices and systems to meet the demands of Formula 1.
The Safety Car has typically run in a plain silver colour with Formula 1 branding, however in 2020 this was updated to support Formula 1's We Race as One initiative, featuring a stylised rainbow representing the diversity of the 10 Formula 1 teams, in an effort to promote better human diversity in motrosport.
